From what i have read in Danish, the folkesong is actually from Sweden and translated into Danish and Norwegian around the 1700s. The first known written version in Danish is from 1710. The story that this song is based on is much older though and comes from old Sagas, It is connected to the old Iceland saga called Hrómundar saga Gripssonar, and the translation is perhaps even wrong. If you listen to the text, it originates before the viking age - more or less around 6-7th century... :-) Being a dane from a remote part of the country, I learnt this song as a child... :-) I have it in a danish folk songs book from 1591, with many more verses... :-)

Even as they, the monsters and the evils, lie dead Ramund remains. But Ramund isn't a hero. The Kaiser, like the giants, can be seen as a multitude of things. He's power, human vanity, fear of death, fear of the inevitable. It doesn't matter how large he builds his castle, Ramund waits right outside the walls. Grinning. Ramund is a lot of things, death, entropy, poetic justice, arbiter and more. It doesn't matter if you are the seven days of the week, if you are a monster or a King, everyone falls to Ramund. Strife, fighting and usurping are not pretty things, they are not "good" things but they are necessary. Aw man, this is missing the part, where the Emperor begs for his life offers Ramund his youngest daughter and half his empire, but Ramund just goes "I'll take it anyway" (or something along those lines) and THEN cuts off the Emperor's head
